1. What two conditions must be met before an entity can be classified as a weak entity? Give an example of a weak entity. To be classified as a weak entity, two conditions must be met: 1. The entity must be existence-dependent on its parent entity. 2. The entity must inherit at least part of its primary key from its parent entity. entity: 1. CLASS is clearly existence-dependent on COURSE. (You can database course exists.) 2. CRS_CODE. The CRS_CODE attribute is also the PK of COURSE. The conditions that define a weak entity are the same as those for a strong relationship between an entity and its parent. In short, the existence of a weak entity produces a strong relationship. And if the entity is strong, its relationship to the other entity is weak. (Note the solid relationship line in the tex decisions. For instance, if the database designer had decided to use a single-attribute as shown in 8, the CLASS entity wou CLASS_CODE, which is not derived from the COURSE entity.) In this case, the relationship between COURSE and CLASS is weak. However, regardless of how the designer classifies the relationship weak or strong CLASS is always existence-dependent on COURSE. 2. A strong relationship exists when en entity is existence-dependent on another entity and inherits at least part of its primary key from that entity. The Visio Professional software shows the strong relationship as a solid line. In other words, a strong relationship exists when a weak entity is related to its parent entity. (Note the discussion in question 1.)

We present a detailed plan to teach Entity-Relationship modeling in an undergraduate course in Database Systems. The course syllabus fulfills the requirements of a first database course in the IS 2002 model curriculum. It is designed to be offered on-line for self-paced learning within the 15 weeks of a regular term. Our goal is to ensure the scope of coverage and the quality of delivery, and at the same time provide sufficient flexibility for student learning. Our teaching plan comprises 19 modules: from the introduction to Extended ER modeling covering specialization and generalization, including two optional modules for alternative ER diagram notations. The teaching plan is complete and yet very compact. The dependency graph governs the flow of the learning modules. Students will then have the flexibility to work out their schedules for their effective use of time and materials on-line. The critical design factor in each module is in the selected ER modeling features to cover, an..

One of the main developments in the database area concerns tools that provide a non expert user with a simple understanding of the database content, and a friendly extraction of information from the database. Moreover, the user often needs data at different aggregation levels, as a result of continuing operations or for statistical analysis. This interaction is usual in scientific and socio-economic applications, but also exists in any business enterprise performing data analysis, market projections or inventory trends. The paper describes a ..

Data modeling is an approach to model data by mapping operational tasks iteratively, while associated guidelines are either partly mapped in the data model or expressed through software applications. Since an organization is a collection of business processes, it is essential that data models utilize such processes to facilitate data modeling. Also, data models should incorporate guidelines for completing operational tasks through the concept of business rules. This paper outlines a unified framework on database modeling and design based on business process concepts that also incorporates business rules impacting business operations. The paper focuses on the relational database and its primary mode of conceptual modeling in the form of an entity relationship model. Concepts are illustrated through Oracle's database language PL/SQL and its Web variant PL/SQL Server Pages.

Chinese discourse coherence modeling remains a challenge taskin Natural Language Processing field.Existing approaches mostlyfocus on the need for feature engineering, whichadoptthe sophisticated features to capture the logic or syntactic or semantic relationships acrosssentences within a text.In this paper, we present an entity-drivenrecursive deep modelfor the Chinese discourse coherence evaluation based on current English discourse coherenceneural network model. Specifically, to overcome the shortage of identifying the entity(nouns) overlap across sentences in the currentmodel, Our combined modelsuccessfully investigatesthe entities information into the recursive neural network freamework.Evaluation results on both sentence ordering and machine translation coherence rating task show the effectiveness of the proposed model, which significantly outperforms the existing strong baseline.

The Semantic Resource Framework (SRF) is a multi-level description of the data sources for search computing applications. It responds to the need of having a structured representation of search services, amenable to service exploration, selection, and invocation. The SRF aims at extending the Service Mart model used so far in search computing to overcome some of its limitations. The main new features include external attributes, which represent the input to be provided by users for accessing objects; selector attributes, describing the ..
