  • Pros

Gloriously free. Accurate navigation. Clear, descriptive voice prompts. Search bar-based interface.

  • Cons

No on-screen QWERTY keyboard (with some devices). No 3D lane guidance or speed limit signs. Confusing UI at times.

  • Bottom Line

It's not the most intuitive GPS app I've tried, but Nokia Ovi Maps offers accurate, robust directions and easy Internet search—all for free on any recent Nokia device.

  • Oct 24, 2008  Considering how the N95 has a built-in GPS and the current version of Google Maps for Mobile supports it, I decided to give it a try. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the main Google Maps site.Google Maps for Mobile is an application written specifically to run on smartphones.
  • Google's approachable and endlessly useful app Mobile App for Nokia S60 phones follows on the pattern Google has perfected for BlackBerry. Search is at this.

Google dropped a bombshell last October with its Google Maps Navigation (Free, N/R)—first on the Motorola Droid ($199.99 direct, ), and later for other Android-powered smartphones. Now Nokia has stepped up with Ovi Maps, and even goes one better than Google by offering free, voice-enabled, turn-by-turn directions anywhere in the world on a compatible Nokia device. (Google's app only works in the U.S.) While Ovi Maps' interface can be confusing at times, it's a good performer and can easily function as the only navigation device you need. That alone could clinch the deal for anyone on the fence about buying an unlocked Nokia smartphone; just be aware of some oddball UI-related limitations.

Features, Requirements, and User Interface
Nokia Ovi Maps, like Google Maps Navigation, is completely free. That means voice-enabled navigation with no up-front cost (take that, Navigon and TomTom!), no monthly fees (take that, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon!), and free map updates (take that, standalone PND vendors!). Ovi Maps offers Navteq maps and navigation for 74 countries, including the U.S. and Canada, plus Lonely Planet, Michelin, and other event guides.

N97 maps keep dissapearing i must have redownloaded and installed maps around 4 or 5 times but when i switch the device on the following morning all the map data is gone, when this happens the n97 allso tells me i need to update ovi maps 3.1 and the c memory update.this is really bugging me as im going to france in two weeks,i have allso.

To grab the app, head to maps.nokia.com, click Download Ovi Maps, select your phone from the drop-down list, and follow the directions. Or you can just buy a new phone; by March, Nokia said all of its GPS-enabled smartphones will come with Ovi Maps preloaded. At the time of this writing, the app works with most new Nokia devices, including the X6, N97 ($599.00 list, N/R), N97 mini, E72 ($359.00 list, ), E55, E52, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic ($359.99 list, N/R) and Navigation Edition ($299.99 direct, ), and the Nokia 5230. For this review, I tested Ovi Maps on a Nokia N97 mini smartphone with an AT&T SIM card. (Note: If you already have a compatible Nokia device, you no longer have to pay monthly fees for navigation; everything is now free.)

The main menu offers nine icons in a grid pattern. From here, you can find your position or other places, share your location, call up favorites, drive or walk somewhere, or check out the weather, local events, and Lonely Planet info. A small navigation bar at the bottom brings up a list of settings categories; when you tilt the N97 to one side, the bar switches to the right and the menu enters landscape mode.

Finding points of interest (POIs) and entering addresses is a bit odd. Basically, you use the app like a glorified Search box. Whether you want a specific street address or the nearest Indian restaurant, you key in the search terms and off you go. That worked really well when using the N97 mini's hardware QWERTY keyboard. But it worked much less well when the device was locked into its windshield mount across the dashboard, which prevents you from extending the keyboard. Amazingly, there is no on-screen QWERTY keyboard; the app only offers handwriting recognition (one letter at a time) or a texting-style numeric keypad for entering addresses, which seems like a bizarre oversight. There's no easily accessible 'Recent Destinations' list either, so forget about one-touch access unless you save every location as a favorite.

Serial After finish install --------, then Reboot your computer/laptop.

In short: enter your address while holding the device in your hand, and then lock it into the N97 mini's complex windshield mount and plug in the power cord. If you want to go somewhere else, disconnect the power cord, pull it out, slide out the keyboard (itself an interesting procedure on the N97 mini), and enter the new destination. Granted, this procedure will differ with other Nokia devices, but it's worth noting.

Map Views, Performance, and Conclusions
Before entering a destination, you can view 2D map, satellite, or terrain information. You can also select a destination via a spot on the map with your finger. Once en route, Ovi Maps displays the current speed, the distance to the next turn, the upcoming street name, and clear map graphics. Unlike Google Maps Navigation, Ovi Maps stores data locally, like TomTom for iPhone and Navigon MobileNavigator. That usually improves navigation accuracy, since the phone is relying on cellular signal much less often. On the other hand, you can't navigate via 3D satellite view the way you can with Google Maps Navigation. Worse, there are no speed limit signs or lane assistance graphics for complex highway interchanges.

Despite those gaffes, Ovi Maps performed well in a series of navigation tests. It offered accurate directions, plus clear voice prompts that correctly pronounced the names of streets. Google should take a cue from Nokia's audio tuning, which delivered well-timed prompts in fluid English. Bring up the Ovi Maps Options menu on the road, and you'll see 12 icons that let you choose a different route, check traffic info, repeat the directions, and see other trip information. Nokia also offers home-based online route planning that could snag a few prospective Microsoft Streets & Trips ($69.99 list, ) customers: Head to maps.ovi.com and register for an account, and you keep track of favorite destinations and routes, add places to the existing map, and sync routes with your handset.

In short, Nokia Ovi Maps is a good, capable program. It's now the default option for anyone considering a Nokia smartphone running Symbian Series 60, and has no clear competitors on that platform. If you buy an Android phone running OS version 2.0 or higher, such as the Droid or the Google Nexus One, you can run the also-free Google Maps Navigation. That app offers stellar voice-enabled search, prettier satellite views during navigation, and other nifty features, but isn't quite as efficient in routing as Ovi Maps. Beyond that, the iPhone offers the most GPS app options, many of which include simpler interfaces than Ovi Maps, but all of which cost money. And there's always the option of picking up an under-$200 PND like the 5-inch TomTom XXL 540-S or the 3.5-inch Garmin 265T. Neither comes with free map or POI updates, but both offer larger touch screens, easier POI searches, and more consistent performance on the road than any of these GPS apps.
